Did you know that in addition to being National Train Your Dog Month, January is also Walk Your Pet Month? What a great month to be a dog!

I know that January in the High Country isn’t always the best time to walk your dog unless you’re an Eskimo at heart! Let’s face it, snow, ice and freezing temperatures can sure make it uncomfortable. We can’t really change the weather to make things easier, but we CAN change our dog’s gear!

If you have worked with me much, you know I love working with dogs on harnessess. A well-fitting harness will protect your dog’s delicate neck from injury, will keep them safe from escape (no backing out!), and will make leash training much easier. There are a lot of different styles of harnesses on the market. My top pick is the Pet Safe 3-in-1 harness!

This harness is fully customizable. Each strap’s length can be adjusted to fit your dog perfectly, and they are all well padded. The 3-in-1 also features both a front loop and back loop for you to attach the leash to. When working with a hardcore puller, attaching the leash to the front of their harness can give you a little bit of power steering as you work towards teaching them leash manners. You can use the rear clip for attaching your long leash so it doesn’t get tangled underfoot.

Petsafe also sells a super handy double-ended leash so you can use both leash attachment points at the same time! I am really enjoying this leash. The handle is super cushy and easily slides along the leash. It even has an extra D-ring so you can convert the leash into a standard 4-foot leash when you need to.
