As you probably know, the High Country is a very dog friendly community! Knox and I have explored several of the local restaurants, shops, and trails. This summer, I’ll be sharing some of our favorite places with you through my blog, social media, and newsletter!

We are also looking for recommendations of new places to check out! Comment below and let us know what restaurant, store, or trail we should review next!

Bayou Smokehouse & Grill

Our favorite place in Banner Elk for lunch or dinner is the Bayou Smokehouse & Grill. The staff is always very friendly and inviting, and work hard to make sure all the dogs on the deck comfortable. They have water bowls ready for your pooch, as well as plenty of head scratches to go around!

They have both covered and uncovered seating, plus a great patio with corn hole. Knox and I usually choose to sit under the wide overhang – we know how unpredictable the weather can be up here! Bayou Smokehouse is known for its unique menu that combines typical Cajun fare with traditional Texan dishes. I love the BBQ Brisket fajitas! They smoke many of their meats in-house, and have lots of homemade dishes on the menu. They also utilize lots of family recipes on their menu. They are known for their Gumbo family recipe.

Some of my favorite dishes include:

  1. Smoked Brie (appetizer)
  2. Wings with Sweet Red Chili sauce (appetizer)
  3. VooDoo Pasta
  4. BBQ Brisket Fajitas
  5. Smoked Sausage plate
  6. Shrimp and Grits (special only)
  7. Bacon Fried Green tomato Po’ Boy
  8. Any burger!

Honestly, though, I’ve never had a bad meal! Their steaks are also wonderful, and HUGE!  I almost always leave with enough leftovers for another meal. Their inhouse deserts are great. You definitely need to try the bread pudding! It is a recipe passed down through the family and so, so good.

Ramble Juice & Ice Cream

If we don’t get dessert at Bayou, Knox and I love to walk down to Ramble Juice & Ice Cream. Their ice cream comes from Asheville, and they are always sure to have something new and unique. I love the Bee’s Knees (honey and lavender) ice cream but have never been disappointed by the ice cream or juices there. They also have peanut butter doggie ice cream available. Every Thursday is Doggy Date Night! Buy one large ice cream and get one doggy ice cream free! All night, from 5 to 9.

Be sure to try their specials! They occasionally have fun and unique ice creams on special. I love the toasted coconut ice cream with toasted coconut and dark chocolate balsamic vinegar drizzled on top! Natalie is a fun and creative spirit, and I LOVE trying out her new combinations!
