Something about the cool temperatures, falling leaves, and fall holidays makes us all crazy for photoshoots! The vibrant colors, fall décor, and cute costumes are a lot of fun to play around with. Do you need some help planning that perfect fall photoshoot?
Not all dogs like costumes
Don’t forget, not all pups like costumes, hats, and other accessories. Keep this in mind when planning your photoshoot. You can carefully work with your dog to get them used to wearing hats and other accessories, but don’t rush it for the sake of a photo. Forcing your dog to do something they don’t enjoy or that scares them can really damage your relationship with them.
Bandanas, scarves, and cute collars are great alternatives for dogs that are wary of costumes and hats. Throw a cute fall blanket or a bit of fabric on the ground or over a stump to add some fall flair to your photo!
Teach your dog to pose
Taking photos of your dog is a lot easier if they know how to pose! Teaching your dog how to ‘stay’ is an important life skill anyways, but it simplifies photo shoots. I also like to teach dogs to put their paws up on different obstacles. It really does make for cute photos if your dog can pose with his paws up on a pumpkin or stump! Struggling to get your dog to stay still while standing? You’re not alone! Teaching your dog to put his paws on a flat target (like a blanket or mat) can also help keep him stationary for photos.
Think about props
There are lots of things that can help you get a great fall photo, even if your dog doesn’t like to play dress up. Many parks and downtown areas have cute fall displays you can use. Decorate your front porch with straw bales, pumpkins, apples, and other fall favorites, then use it as a backdrop. Purchased or handmade signs can also add a lot of personality to your photoshoot.
Buy (or rig) a tripod.
Getting yourself and your dog both into position can be a challenge! If you can set your phone up on a tripod you can get that perfect shot faster because you won’t have to keep adjusting your phone or camera. Some tripods even come with a Bluetooth remote so you can set your phone up and take pictures hands-free. A great option if you want to join your dog in the photos and don’t have someone to help take pictures.
Don’t forget the toys and treats!
Not only can toys and treats be used to reward your dog for being a good, patient model, you can also use them to get them to perk up their ears or make cute faces! Bringing out your dog’s favorite toy can get them really excited about the photoshoot!
Pet-Friendly Locations
Being in the High Country of North Carolina, there is no shortage of beautiful outdoor locations for a photo shoot! The parks, trails, and overlooks offer a wide array of backdrops and the fall foliage is shaping up to be beautiful this year.
Some fall attractions are open to pets and are a great place to get some photos! Make sure to call ahead before taking your dog with you to the corn maze or fall festival. Just because an event is outdoors, does not mean it’s pet-friendly. You may also want to check their photo policies. Some locations charge a fee to use them as a photo shoot location. Be considerate of other guests and don’t hog the best spots, they want photos too!
